A lot of people know the name Von Dutch. A lot of people know it as a clothing line. What many don’t realize is the rich American history behind the person-
The late Kenneth “Von Dutch” Howard.
Kenneth Howard was the innovator of modern motorcycle and automobile pin striping. While working as a mechanic during young adulthood, he gained an appreciation for how things functioned. Concurrently, he was drawing and absorbing the skills of freehand painting from his father, a sign maker and gold leaf artist. In the 50’s, Howard gained notoriety for his precision and designs on motorcycles and experimented with striping cars. Soon, Americans from far and wide brought their cars to South Los Angeles to be “Dutched.”
Throughout life in the spotlight, Howard developed a love for building weaponry, soon to be collectors items and movie props. However, self promotion and money were of no interest to him. Atop his revered talent, this would become part of the reason he was so sought after- For his mystery, humility and indifference toward fame.
Howard’s craft serves as an inspiration to our wardrobes and bringing his talent to light is important to the new Von Dutch team in the relaunch of this brand all over the world. Visit VonDutch.com for more of his story and follow us @VonDutchLLC on Twitter for updates on our journey.
