Shoes are the most difficult fashion habit to break. You can't get much more environmentally irresponsible than filling your closet with shoes you wear once every solar eclipse, if that. Add the fact that most of those shoes are made from animal skin and wow, how do we get to sleep at night?
Melissa is your Melatonin. The newest addition to Eco-Tobi, this sustainable Brazilian footwear company makes hip shoes that are durable, on trend and very reasonably priced. You'll want lots of , and that's okay because Melissa is socially responsible—exceeding Fair Trade benchmarks—and they happen to be one of the most environmentally responsible companies in the world. Melissa uses recycled materials to make their plastic shoes, and they also recycle 99.9% of the waste and water used in the production process.
For Spring 2008, Melissa has every color you could want. Talk about a candy store!
I bought these in NY for prom and they are magnificent! Melissa utilizes this really neat technology called Mel-Flex..here is a little blurb from the Melissa website:
"The result is a composition called MELFLEXTM. This material has characteristics which provide improved elasticity, impermeability and resistance. Its formula contains products which are
hypoallergenic and 100% safe to your health. It is odorless, neutral and natural. "
I was worried that they would be too hot and sweaty because they are made of impermeable rubber, but it was not that big of a problem. Of course, my feet were sweaty, but they didn't smell at all, just as the technology promised. For rubber shoes, they are very comfortable, although I had to get used to the back digging into my heel.
What's really neat is that the outside looks like velvet but is in fact made of rubber.
